In Defense of Animals

Remember The Elephant Nosey? She Still Needs Your Help

Since 2009, IDA has worked tirelessly on behalf of an elephant named Nosey, who suffers in a variety of traveling circuses at the hands of exhibitor Hugo Liebel. With your help, we have documented Nosey's condition and numerous violations of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) as she was dragged around the country to give rides and perform tricks. IDA members sent more than 18,000 letters and e-mails to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) urging the agency to help Nosey.
We reported a year ago that the USDA had finally filed charges against Liebel. These included safe-handling violations that put Nosey and the public at risk, failure to provide adequate veterinary care, violations of food storage requirements, and unsafe and inadequate conditions in Nosey's barn, enclosure, and trailer.
A hearing is scheduled March 26 in Tampa, Florida on the USDA charges. Please click here to read more, and to see how you can help ensure a positive outcome for Nosey.

AFAR Magazine Promotes Trapping Animals For Their Fur

In the January-February 2013 issue of AFAR (a travel magazine), in an article featuring Quebec City, travel journalist Jennifer Kahn glorifies fur trapping, and marvels at pelts from beavers, wolves, ermines and lynx - animals killed by a local trapper. As an educational and sophisticated travel magazine, AFAR should be aware of the incredible cruelty and torture of innocent animals involved in trapping for animal fur.
Please click here to send your comments to AFAR's EVP/Publisher and VP/Associated Publisher. Tell them that you oppose recreational and commercial trapping because it devastates animal populations, and the cruelty inherent in trapping should not be glorified in AFAR's magazine or website.
